About a 15-minute walk south of Best Western River North lies, what many believe to be, the unofficial emblem of the city – the Chicago Theatre. Its beautiful glittering marquee has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, pieces of art, and of course, photos. Chicago Theatre is the premier entertainment venue in Chicago, and you can rest assured that if someone is headlining, they are a master of their profession. A short list of previous headliners is full of icons: Prince, Robin Williams, Aretha Franklin, Jerry Seinfeld, Dolly Parton, Ellen DeGeneres, Alicia Keyes, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, John Cleese, and Mel Brooks. The site was declared as a Chicago Landmark in 1983 and is heralded for its history as much as its beautiful architecture. The 3,600 seat venue measures seven stories high, while its famous vertical “C-H-I-C-A-G-O” sign measures six stories high. The exterior features a miniature version of Paris' Arc de Triomphe, while the grand lobby is modeled after the Royal Chapel of Versailles, and the grand staircase is an ode to the Paris Opera House. Chicago Theatre opened in 1921 and was not only the first of the American movie palaces, it became the prototype, which saw various incarnations throughout the Midwest and within Chicago. Other examples within the city include The Cadillac Palace and The Oriental close by in downtown Chicago, and The Uptown – currently closed – and The Riviera in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. A fair warning: step into Chicago Theatre once, and its history and ornateness will make you want to become a movie palace buff. Upcoming events of interest at Chicago Theatre include Noel Gallagher, Sebastian Maniscalco, The Decemberists, and Carol Burnett. New events are announced continuously and the artists and venue are not to be missed. Chicago Theatre continually ranks as one of the top locations in the city for photo opportunities, so make the short walk south and update your social media accordingly.
