Aren't we all looking for something authentic? Located steps away from the CTA's Lawrence red line station is one of the world's best jazz clubs – Green Mill. After descending the stairs at the Lawrence station, the Mill's neon green sign beckons with the promise of entertainment from a bygone era. After paying the cover – typically $5-$15 – you are not just entering a bar with live music; you are entering a different time, and you feel it. The large, polished wood bar welcomes you to an older generation, and the room stretches out, greeting you with tables and booths covered with white tablecloths topped with candles. Depending on the night, a jazz band plays inches away from the audience overlooked by a marble statue of Ceres, the Greek god of the harvest, now known as Stella. In the corner of the room sits a booth that was dedicated to none other than infamous Chicago gangster, Al Capone. One of Capone's associates was part-owner of Green Mill during Prohibition and trap doors below the building still exist where alcohol was transported into the establishment and also for a quick departure for the gangsters. Famous singers from Capone's era graced the stage, including the likes of Billie Holliday and Al Jolson. The neighborhood in which Green Mill occupies is known as Uptown and has a storied past as an entertainment district, with remnants that remain to this day. Two major music venues are steps away, including The Riviera and Aragon Ballroom. Uptown was a hub for silent films in the 1920s, with a film studio blocks away. Stars such as Charlie Chaplain were said to have frequented Green Mill after shoots at the studio known as Essanay. Be aware that Green Mill is a cash-only, first come, first served, 21+ venue. There is an ATM on-site, so if you forgot cash, not to worry. Green Mill is also one of the original locations for slam poetry. Since 1986, Sunday nights feature some of the city's finest spoken word artists. The Beatnik feel fits right in with the establishment's vibe. Jazz is performed every other night of the week and features a rare closing hour of 4 AM, except for Saturdays when it is open until 5 AM. If you're looking to be transported in time to a place as authentic as a saxophone solo, you won't find anything better than Green Mill.
